Summer vacation for us is really our anniversary trip every year in which we try to visit a different MLB ballpark each year. Usually we go in September over labor day weekend since our anniversary falls very close to that! You can see our trip to Denver last yearย hereย &ย here. As well as Pittsburgh the year beforeย here.
Planning for us is usually looking at the list of ballparks we haven’t visited yet – we always look to see where our Detroit Tigers are playing first so that maybe we can catch them on the road, as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks since my hubby is from Arizona! But we don’t worry too much if they aren’t in a city that we’re interested in going to that year.
Mostly I just track flights and look into some things in the cities that we’re interested in and see where we feel drawn based on activities or travel expenses. Last year we picked Denver because I found tickets at incredible prices plus Jason Isbell was playing at the Red Rocks Ampitheater where we knew we’d want to see a concert and were stoked to be able to see him too! AND turned out the Dbacks were playing the Rockies that week too – so it was an all around win!
Once we have a city/ballpark chosen we scour AirBnB and hotels to find the best deals based on location & price. We’ve actually done an AirBnb every year for our anniversary and have had really great experiences – but I always check hotels to compare prices too.
Then I create a map on Google so that we can add places we might want to eat or places we might want to see! That way when we’re out & about we can just reference the map to see what is near us and easily choose from there versus having to google everything, read reviews, & find things near us while we’re on vacation.
This year we’re working on planning a bigger vacation for September/October so our ballpark adventure either might be small or put on hold for this year…all still pending though ๐ Do you go on a summer vacation?

This is such a fun way to plan a vacation destination. I need to learn how to make a personalized google map. Right now I add things to a Trip Advisor “trip” and then use that map. But I would much prefer a Google map, since I use them for everything else. Thanks for the tip! Tanya – The Other Side of the Road

Making your own Google Map is so easy! Just go to the menu when you’re in Maps, then “your places” and you’ll see an option for Maps – to create your own ๐

Love your idea of your combo baseball/anniversary trip. My hubby is visiting/touring all the MLB stadiums too. Itโs part of his bucket list. He attends the games and also tours the stadium and surrounding areas. This year is Texas Rangers in Arlington before they demolish the current stadium to make a new one. Heโs a Dodgers and Aโs fan. Perhaps when he plans for Detroit may I email you for tips and local things to do?
As for me, I am holding down the fort at home. And owning the tv remote!

That is so very neat Laurie!!! Please do reach out to me when he plans Detroit, we’d love to offer up advice for visiting our favorite ballpark & city ๐
